I am back from my travels! Oh, the fun I had. Two and a half days lolling around a gorgeous, enormous house in the snowy, one-traffic-light town of Douglas, Michigan with nine great girlfriends, both old and new, bookended by two frenetic days in frigid Chicago seeing every long lost friend I could pin down. I was often exhausted and I missed Husband dearly AND I adored every minute of it.
Those minutes included a fun afternoon signing books at The Magic Tree Book Store in Oak Park. I loved that two of the Magic Ladies were named Rose and Iris. I loved that they made me cinnamon toast because they read of my C.T. obsession on my blog. I loved that, when visitors were scant (due to the WORST WEATHER EVER lurking outside), we whiled away the hour gabbing and knitting and drinking tea. It was a delightful afternoon. Thanks Magic Tree ladies!
And now, just like that, it is all over and I’m back. Coming home from vacation can be harsh. Coming home from vacation with gestational diabetes is TRAGIC. Yes folks, last week’s testing revealed that I actually HAVE the dreaded GD, which sounds like a disease you catch from someone unsavory, rather than nice, innocent high blood sugar.
In good news, it’s way manageable and Fig the Fetus and I should be just fine and the diabetes should go away after the baby is born. In bummerific news, I have to stick to this totally rigid, totally healthy diet! When I told my friend Elory about this, she said, “That’s so ironic, since every time I read your blog, you’re writing about candy!” I know, I know! But those days of sugar fiendishness are (temporarily I hope) over.
Because he’s sympathetic and fabulous, Husband bought me a groaning bag of sugar-free candy while I was away, but according the nice dietitian who taught me the ways and means of GD yesterday, sugar-free candy is just as evil as sugar-full candy and I am only allowed, like, one piece a day. Dag! For today’s dietitian-authorized afternoon snack, I had a cup of hot skim milk with a spoonful of unsweetened cocoa and a Splenda. Have you ever heard of a more wan and pathetic cup of hot chocolate in your life?
Siiiiigh. My one consolation comes from squeezing blood out of my pin-pricked fingertips, then using this nifty little electronic doohickey to find out my blood glucose level four times a day. It’s kind of a morbidly satisfying little task! Am I weird and gross or can you relate?
Anyway, here’s something that will surely cheer me up—meeting a bunch of Chicky readers at the Gwinnett County Public Library
in Buford, Georgia! You should so come hear me speak about and read from CHICKS WITH STICKS! Here’s where to go:
